The event is a platform for hobbyists to showcase and launch their custom-built rockets to high altitudes.

The event is typically held over several days. The event's highlight is the rocket launches, where rockets of various sizes ranging from a few inches to over 20 feet are launched to altitudes of several thousand feet.

The LDRS rocket event is held at different locations each year, with the venue being selected by the TRA based on factors such as the availability of launch sites, local regulations, and other logistical considerations. The event has been held in various locations across the United States, including California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Kansas.

Safety is a top priority at the LDRS event. The TRA has strict safety protocols to ensure all launches are conducted safely and responsibly. In addition, participants are required to adhere to the TRA's safety guidelines and comply with Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

More details to follow, make sure to visit the LDRS 41 website for the latest news.

Whitney Richardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10924123383657436729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173959252222736577.post-4998193020671862552023-05-21T14:22:00.006-05:002023-05-21T14:22:57.996-05:00🔴 SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches Axiom-2 Mission to the International Space St...
<h1 class="style-scope ytd-watch-metadata" style="-webkit-box-orient: vertical; -webkit-line-clamp: 2; background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; display: -webkit-box; font-family: "YouTube Sans", Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 2rem; line-height: 2.8rem; margin: 0px; max-height: 5.6rem; overflow: hidden; padding: 0px; text-overflow: ellipsis; word-break: break-word;"><yt-formatted-string class="style-scope ytd-watch-metadata" force-default-style="">🔴 LIVE: SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches Axiom-2 Mission to the International Space Station</yt-formatted-string>

Whitney Richardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10924123383657436729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-173959252222736577.post-25803422054464859972023-05-21T12:40:00.008-05:002023-05-21T12:46:48.572-05:00LAUCH COMPLEX 37bLaunch Complex 37B. The Falcon Heavy has flown before, but now it’s got a payload that matters and competitors nipping at its heels. It’s the first of a new generation of launch vehicles that can take huge payloads to space cheaply and frequently, opening up a new frontier in the space race. Watch it lift off Sunday afternoon (we’ll post a reminder).

This is a test fire in advance of SpaceX's upcoming Falcon 9 Heavy test launch. The test occurred on 1/24/2018 at Kennedy Space Center's LC-39 Pad A which is the same pad that many Apollo and Space Shuttle launches took place from. SpaceX is currently leasing the pad from NASA. Birds can been seen scattering near the area and the delayed rumble of the 12 second test can also be heard. No date has yet been announced for the test launch. This launch will be the first time SpaceX has launched a vehicle of this configuration and at 140,700 lb to low Earth orbit, it will represent the largest lift capacity of any currently available rocket. Although still short of the 150,000 to 290,000 lb capacity of NASA's upcoming SLS rocket (and well shy of Saturn V's 310,000 lb capacity), this rocket will more than double what is currently available from the Delta IV Heavy.
Eight Days in a Garbage Can As NASA’s
efforts to land humans on the Moon picked up speed in the mid-1960s, several
skills had to be mastered: spacewalking, rendezvous, docking, and long-duration
spaceflight. On Gemini IV, Ed White demonstrated NASA astronauts had the
know-how to function outside the spacecraft. Gemini V, NASA’s second
two-astronaut flight, which launched fifty years ago this week, kept the crew
in orbit for eight days, the projected length of an Apollo lunar landing
mission, and set a new space endurance record. Astronauts Gordon Cooper and
Pete Conrad are seen here just prior to being sealed in their Gemini capsule, which
Conrad likened to a “flying garbage can” because of its cramped quarters, which
were not much larger than the front seat of a Volkswagen Beetle.

The planned May 20 fourth launch of a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas-V rocket with a Boeing/U.S. Air Force X-37B spaceplane comes as the Air Force is shifting to more military spaceplane payload development instead of X-37B flight testing of its own systems.

The upcoming flight is carrying a wide variety of military technology payloads including secret payload bay sensors like optics, but its manifest also includes an Air Force xenon thruster important to spacecraft longevity in geosynchronous orbit, along with three small U.S. Naval Academy satellites and two small Aerospace Corp. satellites demonstrating military technologies and several more secret National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) spacecraft.
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida – Today, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) successfully completed its first geostationary transfer mission, delivering the SES-8 satellite to its targeted 295 x 80,000 km orbit. Falcon 9 executed a picture-perfect flight, meeting 100% of mission objectives.

Falcon 9 lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at 5:41 PM Eastern Time. Approximately 185 seconds into flight, Falcon 9’s second stage’s single Merlin vacuum engine ignited to begin a five minute, 20 second burn that delivered the SES-8 satellite into its parking orbit. Eighteen minutes after injection into the parking orbit, the second stage engine relit for just over one minute to carry the SES-8 satellite to its final geostationary transfer orbit. The restart of the Falcon 9 second stage is a requirement for all geostationary transfer missions.

“The successful insertion of the SES-8 satellite confirms the upgraded Falcon 9 launch vehicle delivers to the industry’s highest performance standards,” said Elon Musk, CEO and Chief Designer of SpaceX. “As always, SpaceX remains committed to delivering the safest, most reliable launch vehicles on the market today. We appreciate SES’s early confidence in SpaceX and look forward to launching additional SES satellites in the years to come.”

Today’s mission marked SpaceX’s first commercial launch from its central Florida launch pad and the first commercial flight from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in over four years. SpaceX has nearly 50 launches on manifest, of which over 60% are for commercial customers.

This launch also marks the second of three certification flights needed to certify the Falcon 9 to fly missions for the U.S. Air Force under the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program. When Falcon 9 is certified, SpaceX will be eligible to compete for all National Security Space (NSS) missions.

Destruction was almost instantaneous with ignition. After examining what was left of my fuel grains. It was determined that I didn't get a complete mix of the propellant. My mixer had burned up during processing and I finished the mix by hand. It was evident that I still had pockets of AP and this weakened the grains. A chunk, or chunks of propellant probably clogged the nozzle throat and caused the case to over pressurize. I was pretty much one and done for the weekend. Since this was the rocket and motor case combo I was flying for the Moonburn drag race too.

The motor case was a 3"x28" 6,000ns with 7lbs of propellant. Would of been about an M2000. I was looking for 20,000ft and Mach 2 out of the flight.

I did take lots of pictures the rest of the weekend. So stay tuned for more posts. Fun was had by all who attended. A huge thanks to the KloudBusters organization and all those who worked so hard to make this launch happen!

Cape Canaveral - Nasa has selected Space Florida, a state-backed economic development agency, to take over operations, maintenance and development of the space shuttle's idled landing site at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, officials said on Friday.

Terms of the agreement, which have not yet been finalised, were not disclosed, but Space Florida has made no secret about its desire to take over facilities no longer needed by Nasa to develop a multi-user commercial spaceport, somewhat akin to an airport or seaport.

The state already has a lease for one of the space shuttle's processing hangars, and an agreement with Boeing to use the refurbished facility for its planned commercial space taxi.

The so-called CST-100 is one of three spaceships under development in partnership with Nasa to fly astronauts to the International Space Station, a permanently staffed, $100-billion research outpost that flies about 250 miles above Earth.

Nasa ended its 30-year space shuttle program in 2011, leaving Russia's Soyuz capsules as the sole means to transport crews to the station, a service that costs the United States more than $70-million per person. Nasa hopes to buy rides commercially from a US company by 2017.

The shuttle's retirement left the Kennedy Space Centre loaded with equipment and facilities that are not needed in Nasa's new human space initiative, which includes a heavy-lift rocket and deep-space capsule for journeys to asteroids, the moon and other destinations beyond the space station's orbit.

Last year, Nasa solicited proposals for agencies or companies to take over the shuttle landing facility and its 15 000-foot (4 572-meter) runway, one of the longest in the world.

Additional landing site infrastructure includes an aircraft parking ramp measuring 480 by 550 feet, a landing aids control building, a 90-foot (27-meter) wide shuttle tow way, an air traffic control tower and a 23 000-square-foot (2 137-square-meter) enclosure used by convoy vehicles that serviced the shuttles after landing.

In addition to shuttles returning from orbit, the runway is used by heavy transport aircraft, military cargo planes, T-38, Gulfstream G-2 and F-104 aircraft, and helicopters.

Space Florida would like that list to also include suborbital passenger ships, such as the two-seater Lynx space plane being developed by privately owned XCOR Aerospace, orbital vehicles like Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's air-launched Stratolaunch Systems, and unmanned aircraft.

“We look forward to working with Nasa and KSC leadership in the coming months to finalise the details of this transaction in a way that will provide the greatest benefit to incoming commercial aerospace businesses,” Space Florida President Frank DiBello said in a statement.

Turning the shuttle landing facility over to a commercial operator will save Nasa more than $2-million a year in operations and maintenance costs, documents posted on the agency's procurement website show.

The landing facility also includes a 50 000-square-foot (4 645-square-meter) hangar that Space Florida already owns. A commercial flight services company, Starfighters Aerospace, currently operates there.

Nasa said it received five bids for the shuttle landing facility, including the winning one.

The announcement that Space Florida had been chosen was made by Nasa administrator Charles Bolden who was in Florida for the opening of the shuttle Atlantis exhibit at the Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex.

Proposals to take over one of the shuttle's two launch pads are due on July 5. - Reuters
This latest selection represents the sixth cycle of NASA's continuing call for payloads through an announcement of opportunity. More than 100 technologies with test flights now have been facilitated through NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate's Flight Opportunities Program.
"This new group of payloads, ranging from systems that support cubesats to new sensors technology for planetary exploration, represent the sorts of cutting-edge technologies that are naturally suited for testing during returnable flights to near-space," said Michael Gazarik, NASA's associate administrator for space technology in Washington. "NASA's Flight Opportunities Program continues to mature this key technology development pipeline link, thanks to America's commercial suborbital reusable vehicles providers."
Fourteen of these new payloads will ride on parabolic aircraft flights, which provide brief periods of weightlessness. Two will fly on suborbital reusable launch vehicle test flights. Three will ride on high-altitude balloons that fly above 65,000 feet. An additional payload will fly on both a parabolic flight and a suborbital launch vehicle, and another will fly on both a suborbital launch vehicle and a high-altitude balloon platform. These payload flights are expected to take place now through 2015.
Flight opportunities currently include the Zero-G Corporation parabolic airplane under contract with the Reduced Gravity Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston; Near Space Corp. high-altitude balloons; and reusable launch vehicles from Armadillo Aerospace, Masten Space Systems, UP Aerospace and Virgin Galactic. Additional commercial suborbital flight vendors under contract to NASA, including XCOR and Whittinghill, also will provide flight services.
An international trio flying in a Russian Soyuz capsule docked with the International Space Station on Wednesday with a busy schedule full of space walks and an encounter with a pioneering US cargo craft.

The six-month mission of Russian commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and his two flight engineers — Karen Nyberg of NASA and Italian Luca Parmitano of the European Space Agency — began once their craft sidled up to the orbiting lab six hours after blasting off from the Moscow-owned Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan.

The Soyuz took a shortcut that slashed the travel time from the usual 48 hours thanks to a special orbit that catapaults the astronauts directly to their destination.

The abridged journey had rarely been tried in the past because it puts greater stress on the astronauts' bodies.

But one such trip was successfully completed earlier this year and Russia decided to repeat the experience with a view to making the six-hour journey the norm for future travel to the ISS.

"It was a pretty cool ride," Nyberg told her husband on Earth via video linkup after the trio had reached the ISS and floated on board the station.

Italy's Parmitano said he was especially excited because this was his first chance to experience space flight after years of gruelling training and practise.

"I feel the importance of performing well for all those people who have been working with me through all those years of training to get me to this point," he told reporters shortly before liftoff.

"Because of the training, you feel confident that you know you can do the job you've been trained for."

Past astronauts have made a habit of chronicling their experience with the help of social media websites such as Twitter - winning tens of thousands of followers as a result.

Canada's Chris Hadfield took that social media experiment to new heights this month by releasing a link to his celestial performance of David Bowie's classic Space Oddity.

The performance earned him nearly a million followers overnight.

Hadfield and his two fellow travellers returned safely to Earth on May 14. Left behind are Russian commander Pavel Vinogradov and his own two flight engineers - Chris Cassidy of NASA and the cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin.

Both Parmitano and Nyberg have their own Twitter accounts that were filled with their emotions prior to liftoff.
